Gratitude

Thankful for Every One of You

Every time I think of you, I thank my God. And whenever I mention you in my prayers, it makes me happy.

Philippians 1:3–4 CEV

Everyone has at least one person in their life who puts a smile on their face the moment they come to mind. A friend whose laugh is contagious, a mentor whose wisdom still echoes years later, a family member whose steadiness has been a quiet anchor through every storm. Just thinking of them is enough to lift the spirit.

But life also brings us people who are harder to hold with warmth. Some face daily struggles that make them difficult to be around. Some are cantankerous, worn down by circumstances we may not fully understand. Some are simply worrisome — we carry concern for them even when we do not know how to help. These relationships can be draining, and it is tempting to focus on the friction rather than the person.

Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians from a prison cell. He had no guarantee of what tomorrow would bring. And yet, when he thought of the people he loved, his first response was not complaint or worry — it was gratitude. Every time I think of you, I thank my God. And whenever I mention you in my prayers, it makes me happy. That is a remarkable posture. It is not naive. Paul knew these people well — their strengths and their struggles alike. But he chose to bring them before God with thankfulness rather than frustration.

I have made a similar effort in my own life. Rather than focusing on the flaws of the people around me or allowing myself to become overtly critical, I remind myself that each of my relationships is special and unique. I am thankful to know every one of them, for many different reasons. From some I have learned tenacity and determination. From others, courage and persistence. Some have encouraged me when I was low. Some have inspired me to reach further than I thought I could. Even the difficult ones have taught me patience, compassion, and the grace of seeing beyond the surface.

When I make the effort to see people through the eyes of God — as individuals He created, loves, and is still at work in — something shifts in me. Gratitude replaces criticism. Prayer replaces frustration. And in that exchange, something beautiful happens: I am blessed with happiness, just as Paul described.

Today, think of the people in your life — the delightful ones and the difficult ones alike. Bring them before God with thankfulness. Take their needs and desires to the Lord in prayer. When we choose to see others the way God sees them, our prayers become a source of joy, and our relationships become a gift we might otherwise have overlooked.

Reflections

Who in your life is easy to be grateful for? Who is harder to hold with warmth? What might it look like to bring both kinds of people before God with the same thankfulness Paul expressed? Is there someone you have been critical of that you could choose to pray for today instead?

Prayer

Father, thank You for every person You have placed in my life — the ones who bring me joy and the ones who stretch me. Help me to see each of them through Your eyes, with grace and gratitude rather than frustration or criticism. Teach me to bring their needs and desires to You in prayer, and let that prayer fill me with the happiness Paul knew. May my relationships reflect Your love, and may I be a blessing to every one of them. In Jesus Name, Amen.
