Gratitude

His Kindness Endures Forever

Tell the LORD how thankful you are, because He is kind and always merciful.

Psalm 118:1 CEV

Think about the last time someone went out of their way for you — not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Did you tell them what it meant? Did you let them know that their kindness landed, that it mattered, that it made a difference in your day or your life?

We live in a world where kindness is undervalued and mercy is in short supply. It is genuinely hard to be consistently kind. People are complicated. Some are suspicious of generosity, questioning the motive behind every good deed. Some take kindness for granted, never pausing to acknowledge it. And still others have been hurt enough times that they have stopped extending it altogether. Against that backdrop, consistent kindness is not just a virtue — it is a discipline. It costs something.

And yet God has never stopped.

That is what the psalmist is celebrating here. Not just that God was kind once, or that He showed mercy in a particular moment. The declaration is that He is kind — present tense, ongoing, uninterrupted. His mercy is not seasonal. It does not run out when we are difficult, when we doubt, when we fail, or when we forget to say thank you. His benevolence endures forever.

There is something deeply personal in the psalmist's invitation: tell the LORD how thankful you are. Not just feel it. Not just think it. Tell Him. Gratitude that stays inside never fully does its work. When we speak our thankfulness — when we name what God has done, when we say out loud that His kindness reached us even when we did not deserve it — something shifts in us. We remember who He is. We remember who we are in relation to Him. And we are changed by the remembering.

I want to be kind because God has been kind to me. I want to show mercy because I have received it in abundance — on the days I earned it least, in the seasons I was hardest to love, in the moments I was too proud or too broken to ask for it. His lovingkindness found me anyway.

That is worth more than a quiet, private acknowledgment. That is worth a song. That is worth a shout. That is worth telling.

Reflections

When did you last intentionally thank God — not in a general way, but specifically, naming what He has done for you? Is there a kindness He has shown you recently that you have not yet acknowledged out loud? And is there someone in your life who has been consistently kind to you, someone who deserves to hear that their goodness has not gone unnoticed?

Prayer

Lord, I want to tell You how thankful I am. Not because I have to, but because You deserve to hear it. You have been kind to me when I was difficult. You have shown mercy when I did not deserve it. Your lovingkindness has followed me through every season, and Your compassion has never failed. I do not take that lightly. Let my gratitude be more than a feeling — let it be a declaration, a lifestyle, a way of living that reflects how good You have been to me. Because You are kind, I want to be kind. Because You are merciful, I want to show mercy. Your benevolence endures forever, and I will praise You for it. In Jesus Name, Amen.
