Identity

Chosen First

"All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes."

Ephesians 1:3-4 NLT

Every relationship we enter carries both rewards and responsibilities. When we choose to be in relationship with someone — a friend, a spouse, a mentor — we open ourselves to the benefits that come with that connection. We also take on the weight of what that relationship requires. The choosing matters. And what we choose shapes who we become.

When I chose to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, I stepped into a relationship unlike any other. The rewards were immediate and real — forgiveness, peace, a sense of purpose I had never known before. But as I grew in my faith, I began to discover something that stopped me in my tracks. Something that reframed everything I thought I understood about my decision to follow Jesus.

I had not chosen first.

Paul opens his letter to the Ephesians with a declaration that is almost too large to take in. Before God made the world — before there was a sky or a sea, before there was a human being to love or a history to unfold — He loved us. He chose us. Not because of anything we would do or become, not because He foresaw our faithfulness or our good intentions, but simply because love is who He is and we were already on His mind.

That is not a small thing. That is the foundation of everything.

We live in a world where belonging is usually conditional. You earn your place. You prove your worth. You perform well enough to be chosen — for the team, for the job, for the relationship. And if you fall short, the choosing can be undone. Most of us carry that framework into our understanding of God without even realizing it. We think our relationship with Him began when we decided to believe. We think His love for us is a response to our choice.

But Ephesians 1 says something entirely different. His love came first. His choosing came first. Before the foundation of the world, your name was already known to Him. Your life was already precious to Him. Your destiny was already being prepared for you.

And what is that destiny? To be holy and without fault in His eyes. Not because of your own righteousness — you and I both know how far short of that we fall — but because of your union with Christ. When you are in Him, God sees you through Him. The fault, the failure, the history of wrong choices — covered. What remains is the person God always saw when He looked at you: the one He loved before the world began.

This is what your relationship with Jesus completes. Not just a transaction of forgiveness, as wonderful as that is. A destiny. The full unfolding of everything God created you to be — holy, beloved, chosen, and equipped with every spiritual blessing available in the heavenly realms.

You did not find God. He found you first. You did not choose Him out of nowhere. You responded to a love that had been reaching toward you since before time began.

Let that settle over you today. You are not in this relationship on probation. You were chosen — before the world was made, before you drew your first breath, before you ever said yes.

Reflections

How does it change your sense of identity to know that God chose you before you chose Him — before the world even existed? Are there areas of your life where you still feel like you have to earn your place with God, or prove that His choosing you was worth it? Sit with Ephesians 1:3-4 today and let it speak to those places. What does it mean for your daily life to live as someone who was chosen first?

Prayer

Lord, I am undone by this truth. Before the world was made, You loved me. Before I knew Your name, You chose me. Before I had done anything to deserve it, You decided I was worth it. I confess that I have not always lived from that place. I have tried to earn what You already freely gave. I have doubted my standing when I should have rested in Your choosing. Today I receive what Your Word declares over me — that I am blessed with every spiritual blessing, that I am holy and without fault in Your eyes, not because of who I am but because of who You are and what You have done. Let this truth be the ground I stand on. Let it shape how I see myself, how I treat others, and how I walk through every day You give me. I am Yours — and You chose me first. In Jesus Name, Amen.
