Foremost in His Thoughts
"How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand — when I awake, I am still with you."
Psalm 139:17-18 NIV
There is a particular kind of vulnerability that comes with being truly known.
Most of us manage it carefully. We show certain people certain parts of ourselves — the parts we are proud of, the parts that are easy to explain, the parts that make us look good. And we keep other parts hidden. The thoughts we are not sure about. The motives we do not fully understand ourselves. The moments we are not proud of. The fears we have never said out loud.
We do this because we have learned, somewhere along the way, that being fully known is a risk. That if someone saw everything — really everything — they might pull back. They might think less of us. They might leave.
And then there is Psalm 139.
David writes this psalm from the startling awareness that he has no hidden parts. Not from God. God knows when he sits and when he rises. He perceives his thoughts from afar. He is familiar with all his ways. Before a word is on David's tongue, God knows it completely. There is nowhere to go that God is not already there.
This could feel like surveillance. Like exposure. Like the uncomfortable sensation of being watched.
But that is not where David lands. He lands here: "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God."
God is intimately acquainted with David — with everything David does, everything he thinks, everything that motivates him, every shadow and every bright place — and the result is not distance. The result is thoughts. Countless, precious, uncountable thoughts. More than the grains of sand on every shore of every ocean on earth.
Let that settle for a moment.
God knows you completely. He sees what you do when no one is watching. He knows the thought behind the thought — the real motivation underneath the one you present to the world. He knows the version of you that shows up at your worst, the doubts you have never voiced, the places where your faith has wavered and your courage has failed. He knows all of it.
And He is thinking about you. Constantly. Tenderly. More times than you could count in a lifetime.
This is not the attention of a judge cataloguing your failures. This is the attention of a Father who is simply, deeply, continuously aware of you — the way you are aware of someone you love. The way a thought of them surfaces naturally throughout the day, not because you are trying, but because they matter to you.
You matter to God like that. Not in spite of what He knows about you. Because of who He is — and because He chose you.
And notice how the psalm ends: "When I awake, I am still with you."
Not "when I awake, I hope You are still there." Not "when I awake, I check to see if You are still willing." When I awake — after the night, after the silence, after whatever the hours brought — I am still with You. The presence is unbroken. The closeness is constant. He does not step away while you sleep and return when you are performing well. He stays.
God chooses, every single day, to walk with you. To be by your side. To keep you foremost in His thoughts — not because you have earned that place, but because that is the kind of God He is.
You are fully known. You are deeply loved. And you are never far from His thoughts.
Reflections
Is there a part of yourself — a thought, a motive, a habit, a fear — that you have been keeping at a distance from God because you are not sure how He would respond to it? What would it mean to bring that specific thing to Him today, knowing that He already sees it and is still thinking about you with tenderness? Sit with the image of waking up and finding Him already there.
Prayer
Lord, You know me completely — more than I know myself. You see what I do and what I think and what drives me underneath it all. And somehow, knowing everything, You still choose me. You still think about me more times than I could ever count. That is almost more than I can take in. Thank You for being a God who does not pull back when He sees the whole picture. Thank You for staying through the night and being there when I wake. Walk with me today — not just in the moments when I feel worthy of Your presence, but in all of them. I am so grateful I am never far from Your thoughts. In Jesus Name, Amen.
