Joy Is Your Strength

"Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

Nehemiah 8:10 NIV

Have you ever noticed how exhausting it is to carry grief, worry, or disappointment for an extended stretch of time? There is a reason for that. Our emotions have a direct and powerful impact on our energy levels. What we dwell on shapes how we feel — and how we feel shapes what we are able to do.

Nehemiah understood this. The people of Israel had just heard the Law of God read aloud, and they were weeping — overcome with conviction and sorrow over how far they had strayed. Their grief was real and understandable. But Nehemiah stepped in with a surprising instruction: stop grieving. Go eat good food. Drink something sweet. Share with those who have nothing. Celebrate — because this day belongs to the Lord.

His reason was not that their feelings did not matter. It was that this was not the moment for grief. It was a holy day, and the appropriate response to a holy God on a holy day was joy. And then he said something remarkable: the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Not your discipline. Not your determination. Not your ability to push through. Joy.

This is not a call to pretend everything is fine or to paste a smile over real pain. It is an invitation to make a deliberate choice about what you dwell on. When you fix your attention on the goodness of God — His faithfulness, His provision, the ways He has shown up in your life — something shifts. Energy returns. Perspective widens. The weight you have been carrying feels lighter.

Joy is not a luxury for easy seasons. It is a spiritual discipline for every season. And when it is rooted in who God is rather than in your circumstances, it becomes a source of strength that circumstances cannot take away.

Dwell on what brings you joy today. Not as an escape from reality, but as an act of faith — a declaration that God is still good, still present, and still worthy of your celebration.

Reflections

What is one thing God has done in your life — recently or long ago — that genuinely brings you joy when you think about it? Spend a few minutes dwelling there today and notice what it does to your energy and your outlook.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that joy is not just an emotion but a source of strength You have placed within reach. Help me to choose today what I dwell on — to fix my eyes on Your goodness, Your faithfulness, and Your presence in my life. When grief or worry tries to drain me, remind me that the joy of the LORD is my strength. I receive that strength now. In Jesus Name, Amen.
