A Name Above Every Name

The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10 NLT

When I was expecting my child, choosing a name was one of the most meaningful things I did in those months of waiting. I did not want just any name — I wanted one that meant something. I would look up origins and definitions, turning names over in my mind, hoping to find one whose meaning might somehow shape the person my child would become. Names, I believed, carry weight. They identify. They speak before the person ever walks into the room.

And that instinct is not wrong. We all know what it is to hear a name and feel like we already know something about the person who carries it. A name can arrive ahead of its owner, trailing a reputation — good or difficult — that colors every expectation before the first handshake. The name alone tells you something.

This is exactly why the name of the Lord is so powerful a comfort.

When the writer of Proverbs says that the name of the Lord is a strong fortress, he is not speaking poetically about a word. He is speaking about a reputation — a character so established, so proven, so utterly reliable that simply calling on that name is enough to find shelter. The name of Jesus carries with it everything He has ever been and done: healer, redeemer, sustainer, deliverer, the one who walks on water and calms the storm and raises the dead. You do not have to explain your situation in full before calling on Him. The name itself is the fortress.

When I am in distress — when the anxiety rises or the circumstances press in or the night feels longer than it should — it is that name I call on. Not a formula, not a technique. A name. His name. And in calling it, I am running to the fortress the proverb describes, the one that has never been breached, the one whose walls do not depend on my strength to hold.

The godly run to him and are safe. Not walk — run. There is urgency in that word, and permission. You do not have to compose yourself before you come. You do not have to have the right words ready. You run, the way a child runs to a parent when something frightens them, trusting completely that the one they are running to is bigger than whatever is chasing them.

His name is a strong fortress. Run to it. You will be safe.

Reflections

Is there a name you chose carefully — for a child, a pet, a project — because you wanted the meaning to matter? How does knowing that the name of Jesus carries the full weight of His character and reputation change the way you call on Him? In what area of your life do you need to run to that fortress today?

Prayer

Lord, Your name is above every name — and it carries everything You are. Thank You that I do not have to face distress alone, that I can call on Your name and find a fortress that never fails. Teach me to run to You quickly, without hesitation, the way a child runs to safety. Let Your name be the first thing on my lips when fear or trouble comes, and remind me again and again that in You, I am safe. In Jesus Name, Amen.
