My Portion Forever
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:25–26 NIV
There are days when I just do not feel well. My body may ache with pain, or I may be fighting off a cold. I may be emotionally drained over a difficult situation, worried about finances, or carrying the weight of a fractured relationship. The pressures of everyday living can pile up quietly until they feel like too much to hold.
Life has many ailments — physical and emotional — that can hinder our well-being. These are real. They are not imagined, and they are not small. The psalmist Asaph understood this deeply. In Psalm 73, he wrestles honestly with discouragement and the feeling that life is not working the way it should. He is worn down, and he does not pretend otherwise.
But then something shifts. He turns his eyes toward God, and everything looks different. He arrives at one of the most honest and beautiful declarations in all of Scripture: Whom have I in heaven but you? There is nothing on earth I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Notice what he does not say. He does not say his circumstances changed. He does not say the pain went away or the problem was resolved. What changed was his focus. He took his eyes off of his hardship and fixed them on God — and that repositioning made all the difference.
When we bring our stress, our aching bodies, our fractured relationships, and our overwhelmed hearts to God, we are not pretending those things do not exist. We are simply choosing to place them in the hands of the One who is bigger than all of them. Taking our eyes off our hardship and placing them on God positions us to receive whatever He has for us in that moment — strength, peace, comfort, clarity, or simply the assurance that we are not alone.
Today, whatever is weighing you down, bring it to Him. He is your portion forever.
Reflections
What is weighing most heavily on you today — physically, emotionally, or relationally? Take a moment to name it honestly before God. What would it look like to shift your focus from the hardship to the One who holds you? What do you need to receive from Him right now?
Prayer
Father, there are days when my body is tired, my heart is heavy, and the pressures of life feel like too much. I bring all of it to You today. I choose to take my eyes off of what is overwhelming me and fix them on You. You are the strength of my heart when my own strength runs out. You are my portion — not just for today, but forever. Meet me in this moment with exactly what I need. In Jesus Name, Amen.
