His Greatest Accomplishment
"He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession."
James 1:18 NLT
In the beginning, God worked.
Day by day, He spoke light and darkness into their places. He separated the waters and gathered the dry land. He filled the sky with sun and moon and stars — an expanse so vast that astronomers are still measuring it thousands of years later. He covered the earth with vegetation, filled the seas with creatures, and populated the skies with birds. And after each day, He looked at what He had made and called it good.
Good. But not finished.
On the sixth day, God did something different. He did not simply speak. He formed. He shaped. He breathed. He made humanity in His own image — male and female — and placed them in the middle of everything He had created. And then, on the seventh day, He rested.
Not because He was tired. God does not grow weary. He rested because the work was complete. And the work was complete because you were here.
James 1:18 captures something extraordinary about how God sees His people. Out of all creation — the galaxies, the mountains, the oceans, the creatures great and small — we became His prized possession. The word carries the idea of a firstfruits offering, the choicest portion, the part set apart as most valuable. You are not one item in a long list of things God made. You are the crown of it all.
And He chose this. James is careful to say that God chose to give birth to us. This was not accidental. It was not obligatory. It was the deliberate, joyful decision of a Creator who wanted you — specifically, personally, completely.
This matters deeply on the days when you do not feel like anyone's prize. The days when you feel overlooked, or like you have failed too many times, or like the world has made it clear that you are not enough. Those feelings are real, but they are not true. The truth is written into the very structure of creation itself: God saved the best for last. He built an entire universe and then made you, and only then did He rest.
You are not unloved. You are not unworthy. You are the reason He put down His tools.
When the voice of doubt tells you that you do not matter, remember what God did before He rested. He made you. And He called it very good.
Reflections
In what areas of your life do you most struggle to believe that God treasures you? What would change — in how you carry yourself, how you treat others, how you face your day — if you truly lived as someone who is God's prized possession? Take a moment to sit with James 1:18 and let it speak to the places where you have felt least valued.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for choosing me. Not because I earned it, not because I am without flaw, but because You decided before the foundation of the world that I would be Yours. When I feel unloved, remind me that You built a universe and saved the best for last — and that best was me. Help me to walk today in the truth of who You say I am: prized, chosen, treasured above all else You have made. Let that truth silence every lie that tells me otherwise. In Jesus Name, Amen.
