Knowing God Changes Everything
"Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice."
Proverbs 1:7 CEV
We live in an age of information. At any moment, you can search for the answer to almost any question and have a response in seconds. We have more access to knowledge than any generation before us — and yet, by most measures, we are not living wiser, more peaceful, or more purposeful lives because of it.
Something is missing. And Proverbs 1:7 tells us exactly what it is.
"Respect and obey the LORD. This is the beginning of knowledge."
Not the middle of knowledge. Not a helpful supplement to knowledge. The beginning. The starting point. The foundation without which everything else you accumulate — education, experience, information, expertise — is built on shifting ground.
The Hebrew word translated "fear" or "respect" here is yirah — a reverent awe that recognizes who God is and responds accordingly. It is not terror. It is the posture of someone who understands that they are standing before the One who made everything, knows everything, and holds everything together. That posture changes how you see the world. It changes how you make decisions. It changes what you value and what you pursue.
In other words — it changes everything.
And here is what makes this more than a principle: Jesus.
When God became flesh and walked among us, He did not arrive as a distant authority issuing commands from a safe distance. He came as one of us. He was born into a family. He got tired. He grieved. He felt the weight of betrayal and the sting of rejection. He faced temptation in the wilderness and pressure in the garden. He knows what it means to be human — not theoretically, but personally, from the inside.
This means that when you bring your confusion, your fear, your exhaustion, your impossible decisions to God, you are not bringing them to someone who cannot relate. You are bringing them to the One who has walked this road and who, from that place of perfect understanding, offers you wisdom that is not just correct — it is kind. It is tailored. It is given by someone who knows exactly what you are carrying.
There are many benefits to a relationship with Jesus — peace that does not depend on circumstances, joy that runs deeper than happiness, purpose that outlasts any season of life, strength that shows up when yours runs out. Every one of these is designed to give you a genuine, lasting sense of well-being. Not the surface-level kind the world sells, but the deep-rooted kind that holds when everything around you is shaking.
But all of it starts in the same place. Respect and obey the LORD.
Not because God needs your reverence, but because you need what reverence opens up. When you begin with God — when you orient your life around who He is rather than what you want or what the world recommends — you gain access to a wisdom that no search engine can provide and no degree can confer.
Knowledge begins with knowing God. And knowing God changes everything.
Reflections
In what area of your life are you most tempted to rely on your own understanding rather than seeking God's wisdom first? What would it look like to bring that specific situation to Him today — not after you have already decided, but at the very beginning? How might starting with God change the outcome?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often reach for my own understanding before I reach for You. I gather information, weigh my options, and ask for Your blessing on the conclusion I have already reached. Forgive me for that. Today I want to start with You — to bring You my questions before I form my answers, my decisions before I make them, my challenges before I try to solve them. Thank You that You are not a distant God who issues instructions without understanding. You know what it is to be human. You know what I am carrying. Teach me Your wisdom. Let the reverence I have for You be the beginning of everything I think and do. In Jesus Name, Amen.
